Preview: Amazing art on display this fall

When does art begin? In the mind? With a spark from a creative teacher? When it is on display for family and the public to enjoy?

For dozens of Spring Branch ISD (SBISD) students, the answer is “all of the above.” This fall, their art teachers have selected student works for display in the Altheretta Yeargin Art Museum (AYAM). Located on the north side of the Westchester Academy of International Studies campus, the museum will showcase pieces from nine SBISD schools from Oct. 1 through Dec. 12.

Multidisciplinary art

Student work in the exhibit stems from class assignments that often incorporate research, literacy, science and heritage.

“Our second graders enjoyed celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month while learning about Mexican sun and moon folk art, connecting the lesson to the culture of many of our students and families,” said Pam Stone, art teacher at Pine Shadows Elementary (PSE).

At Northbrook High School (NHS), art teacher Lauren Mohan selected eight pieces for the fall show, including two from her AP Studio Art class. Those students complete a semester-long, inquiry-based exploration of a concept, theme or question through 15 artworks paired with written evidence—an intensive process that demonstrates deep engagement with materials, processes and ideas.

“These art pieces are usually centered on important topics for the artist and lead to extraordinary student works,” Mohan said.

Other selections from NHS include oil pastel still lifes from her Level 3 Drawing class and fashion designs inspired by creatures from nature, created in her Level 2 Drawing class.

Involving the family

Families of the selected artists receive details about when and where the artwork will be on display, so they can visit the museum to celebrate their child’s work in a public setting.

“Students and families are always thrilled to see their students in the spotlight,” Stone said. “Watching a student’s face light up when they first see their work displayed is magical. It validates the time and planning used to help the new artist experience the joy and pride of being recognized for their efforts.”

Mohan added that the opportunity gives her students confidence and community exposure.

“I think it is an excellent opportunity for students to gain recognition in their community and build their sense of accomplishment,” she said. “I love getting to showcase the hard work of the young artists from my classroom to represent my campus and their families.”

Visitors welcome

During the fall semester, all SBISD second graders visit AYAM on field trips to see both the permanent collection and the student art show. The public is also welcome to visit the museum on school days from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. when second-grade tours are not scheduled. Visitors should call 713-251-1990 to confirm availability and arrange a visit.

In addition to AYAM, student artwork from other SBISD schools will be on display during the school year in the Administration Building’s front lobby and upstairs hallway, as well as in the district Tax Office. Visitors with valid identification are welcome to view the displays during normal business hours.

Come show your support for these budding artists by visiting AYAM this fall and exploring exhibits in central office facilities throughout the year. We are #SBISDProud of their creativity and accomplishments.
